Back in the 1970s, a theologian/seminary professor, Dr. Scott Bartchey, did some fine work on examining the context of women in church leadership. It changed the perspective I'd been taught. He broke all passages on any topic into 3 categories, each with different weight. Normative-a command, what should be. Descriptive-tells what happened, but with no command to do the same. Problematic-a specific solution to a specific problem at a specific time and place, that cannot be transferred out of that.
Congratulations on your defense, Dr. Flory! Was it recorded, by chance? Your subject fascinates me and overlaps with what I’ve encountered in lay-level study of the Song of Songs and the Gospel of John. Excited to learn more!
I would love to receive a pdf of your dissertation!
I will send you one when it’s signed off and ready to go. Thanks for your interest, Tim!
